RESEARCH POSITIONS:
Positions required: Research Director and Research Manager
Catalyst Management Services (CMS), a 15 year old leading consulting, research and training organisation working in Asia invites candidates for the two positions of 1. Director – Research and 2. Manager -Research. The positions oversee / manage all research conducted by the Catalyst Group (which includes a. CMS, b. Swasti (health resource centre) and c. Vrutti (livelihood resource centre). The kinds of research includes Policy, Programme, Services and Products, using a variety of approaches including quantitaitve, qualitative mixed methods and participatory methodologies. Applicants must have at least 10 / 5 years direct experience in research and should be versatile in designing, managing and concluding research. Knowledge expected include research methodologies hypothesis building, sampling, data management, quality assurance data collection analysis and developing implications for program or sector, deep understanding of key social sector issues (in health, education and livelihoods), field realities in Asia, particularly India. Understanding and working knowledge of project management tools such as log frame and outcome mapping would be preferred. Skills expected are excellent communication both written and oral, team management, project management, analysis software such as quantitative and qualitative and multi-stakeholder management. Candidates should preferably be a Doctorate (or should have considerable experience in research) or Post Graduate degree / diploma from leading Universities. Terms of reference – Director- Research
Role: As the head of the Research unit of the CMS group, the Director is to provide strategic direction and be responsible for the overall performance of the unit and its contribuiton to the vision and goals of the Catalyst Group organisations. To this end, specific functions include:
a) Strategise and plan: Develop participatively a business plan for the Research Unit, which contributes to the research requirements internally (CMS group) and to the sectors of focus of the group (currently health, education, livelihoods, governance, climate change and disaster management). Focus on producing high quality and integrity of research findings, which are useful and used in sectoral decisions, policies and programmes effectively.
b) Support business development: Support the team in proactively approaching sectoral players and CMS group organisations for strategic work, long term partnerships and a variety of short term resarch projects, which further the knowledge of the group and also contribute to the sector.
c) Build a high powered team: Internally buid a small but high powered team of professionals, committed to high quality and integrity of research, which are useful and used in sectoral decisions, policies and programmes effectively. Also build a pool of netwrok consultants who can contribute on a continuing basis and who are of similar value systems and are loyal to the requirements of the Group.
d) Develop capacities: Develop capacities of the research team to design, manage and deliver high quality research.
e) Partnerships: Build and maintain strategic partnerships with both clients and other partners in executing research.
f) Contribute to policy and sector develoment: Research outputs of the Unit should demonstrably contribute to the development of both policy and sectoral development both directly and indirectly through articles and publications
g) Pioneer tools, approaches and methodologies (TAM): Constantly innovate and explore new vistas and develop, pioneer and adapt tools that significantly improve the way research is conducted and how the information is used in decision and policy making.
Any other duties assigned from time to time by the Chief Executive Officer.
CMS encourages its staff to take an active role in the Management of the Organisation. Time, efforts and contribution to the Organisational managmeent is considered as one of the key aspects of the performance. This is however voluntary.

Role: As the Manager of the Research unit of the CMS group, responsibility includes managing performance of the Unit and its team members. To this end, specific functions include:
a) Develop business: Proactively approach sectoral players and CMS group organisations for strategic work, long term partnerships and a variety of short term resarch projects, which further the knowledge of the group and also contribute to the sector.
b) Deliver business plans: Deliver the plans developed for the Unit, in a effective and efficient manner ensuring optimal performance in the spheres of quality, productivity, costs, innovation and profits while keeping operating principles and values of the Catalyst Group.
c) Build a high powered team: Internally buid a small but high powered team of professionals, committed to high quality and integrity of research, which are useful and used in sectoral decisions, policies and programmes effectively. Also build a pool of netwrok consultants who can contribute on a continuing basis and who are of similar value systems and are loyal to the requirements of the Group.
